Life outside of academics
Theatre, especially musicals
- Grateful to live in Singapore, where troupes from West-end often visit.
- I like contemporary musicals, my favourites are Hamilton (duh), Legally blonde, Beetlejuice… and many more.
- All musicals (movie and live) reviews are in my Letterboxd!
- I make it a point to always watch live when I can, but since I am overseas right now, this is on pause for the time being.
TTRPGs
- I love playing Dungeons & Dragons and watching live plays!
- I have been recently obsessed with Critical Role Campaign 4. My favourite character so far is Occtis Tachonis just because he has such a cool design. (I mean just look at him!).
Podcasts
- Big fan of Trash Taste, Philosophize This!, and Big A. (I know Atrioc is technically a streamer, but I treat his videos like podcasts so close enough).
Japanese-culture stuff (AniList)
- I have been a fan of Hololive Production since 2020, and I still actively support them.
- My favourite member currently is Gigi Murin (love this song of hers!). She is a believer of whimsy, and I am the complete opposite of whimsy… and opposite attracts.
- My so-called 神推し is, and will always be, Minato Aqua (or erm… Yuuki Sakuna). She is truly my 🐐.
- I would call myself a retired anime watcher, but I am getting back into business! I usually prefer reading the manga instead.
- Also a big J-Pop and J-Rock fan.
Books (Goodreads)
- I mostly read murder mysteries and thrillers, or fantasy and world-building.
- Sometimes, I enjoy thought-provoking pieces (my favourite book of all time is Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations).
Movies (Letterboxd) and TV Shows (Serializd)
- For movies, I mostly watch musicals. I am a big fan of theatre!
- I really, really, really like thought-provoking movies.
- I don’t watch TV shows usually (I prefer anime), but sometimes I watch stuff recommended by friends.
Video Games (Backloggd)
Others
- I play NYT crosswords, at least the Minis and Midis, almost daily! (Please be my friend).
- Not smart enough to play the big crossword, especially Thursday onwards, but I am getting there!
- I love museums and arts, especially Greco-Roman sculptures.
- But I think this is mostly because I love history. I am trying to be more knowledgeable in this field.
- I wish to live a simple(r) life.
- Some examples I look up to is PewDiePie’s minimalist lifestyle and David Foster Wallace’s idea of awareness. And more recently, Perfect Days.
FAQ
Why do you have so many things that you like?
- Because they make me happy.
- I try to be more mindful of how I spend my day. I don’t want my life to be work-centric and therefore monolithic.
- I also don’t have any social media. (not for productivity reasons, but for mindfulness reasons!)
- And these things exist to remind me of what is sacrificed when I accept more responsibilities at work.
How do you have the time to do all that?
- I don’t! They are not “goals” or things that I optimize for (in fact, I am against optimizing for anything in general). I don’t force myself to do them (I mean, just look at my miserable backloggd … but it doesn’t mean I don’t love video games). They are just a list of things I do when I want (and have the time) to do them.
- They also remind me that there is life outside of work, so I guess it’s more like I find the time to do them (because I want to do them).
Any other stuff you want to add in the future?
- Yeah! I want to add at least one sports thing there, but nothing sticks yet.
